Kaleidoscope is a small place, crammed to the ceilings with stacks of collectible comics in sooty plastic wrap and moldy tomes with broken spines, with a small island desk buried in the middle, harboring the one man that works there immovably. “Ha, if you have six hundred bucks.” The guy replied. This number did not surprise me. In fact, part of me was wondering why I bothered to ask in the first place. I knew the price would be exorbitant and unaffordable, but I wanted to prove to him the I was initiated. I hoped to demonstrate I was more than another wandering student or feigning hipster looking for a cheap copy of Ulysses or A Moveable Feast. (Not to say there is anything wrong with that, I own used copies of both of those books.) Mainly I wanted to prove to the storeowner that I had some knowledge of the obscure books he exchanged with antediluvian college professors and wealthy collectors. I wanted to be taken seriously despite not being his usual clientele. I blame this desire notably on my friend Tom. When we were in college, frequenting Curious Book Shop more so than our English class, he pushed me towards the lesser-known works of canonized writers that we read mostly to goad our own egos. This resulted in a self-serving advantage when discussing books, primarily amongst other English majors and youthful pseudo-intelligentsia. Our imagined erudition was by all means arrogant and narcissistic, but it eventually served a humbling purpose. In time, I think both Tom and I reached the realization that we were digging ourselves into a hole, creating an abyss of references and proclaimed knowledge that essentially led nowhere. At the end of the day, we both read because we loved learning, not to make an ostentatious display. One day I sat down for coffee with an older friend/mentor named Donnie, a man of immense book knowledge, and he mentioned Donald Barthelme and Thomas Pynchon in passing as we conversed. An instant sense of panic surged through me when I realized I’d never read anything by either of these writers. I immediately found that I had turned reading into a competition, a hipster platitude that has become obscenely prevalent as of late. We create an arsenal of cultural references and use them to apotheosize ourselves. Luckily, the moment I came to this conclusion, I could start reading with a new perspective, regaining the same curious passion I used to have when my parents read to me before bed when I was small. I saw that the only reason I would speciously mislead people into believing I’ve read more than I have in actuality or bombastically articulate vague literary ideas is to hide my own insecurities. That in many ways the culture of reading can quickly be smeared from a communal and pivotal way to learn and be transformed into an isolating and exclusive way to socially expound personal intelligence. To put it simply, I got lost. I forgot that reading should be a way of unifying people rather than a way to show-off. In the book I’m currently reading, The Recognitions by William Gaddis, there is a scene in which a character named Otto walks around a crowded party and keeps making the comment, “I’d say he was a latent heterosexual”, hoping that someone will acknowledge his cleverness and wit. At times, I groaned audibly as I read this scene, with the understanding that I used to do the same thing. I used to roam around parties and want my brilliance to be recognized. I would talk about books venomously and vituperate in some obscure hopes of being elevated amongst my peers. It was the moment I destroyed this reflex that I could at last sit down, relax, and regain my genuine love of reading.

Students tend to fail in developing an adequate understanding of the concepts, reasoning, and problem solving skills. The lack of understanding in learning geometry often cause discouragement among the students, which invariably will leads to poor performance in public examination. A number of factors have been put forward to explain why learning geometry is difficult due to geometry language, visualization abilities, and ineffective instruction. Poor reasoning skills are also another area of concern among secondary school students. Many are unable to extract necessary information from given data and many more are unable to interpret answers and make conclusions. Traditional approaches in learning geometry emphasized more on how much the students can remember and less on how well the students can perform the process of problem solving that includes higher order mathematical thinking skills and reasoning. Thus learning becomes forced and creates anxiety among students and seldom brings satisfaction to the students. However, there was a significant interaction effect between delivery model and prior web experience. This indicates that for some learners, certain delivery models may be more ffective for web-based environments (Ahern, T. ; Martindale, T. , 2001). The results of the recent study showed that the learners who used the hybrid web based learning model displayed a better understanding of the necessary concepts and were able to apply their learning experiences to real life contexts better than the learners who were exposed to the traditional teaching method only (Naidoo, N. ; Naidoo, R. , 2006). With the current bodies of research and knowledge on development both of the learner, and the instructor, there is a need now more than ever to re-examine and develop a new model for instructional design. It may be necessary then, to abandon, or perhaps significantly modify, the traditional instructional design models that were grounded in behavioral terms in favor of a model that is more experiential (Kolb, 1984). 4. The reason active reading is so important is that it helps to keep your mind dynamic and willing to explore, and promote fresh ideas. Mortimer Adler states that â€Å"writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts the author expressed† (p9.) The meaning of active reading is that one is reading something with a clear intent to evaluate and understand the material. â€Å"The physical act of writing, with your ow n hand, brings words and sentences more sharply before your mind and preserves them better in your memory† (p12.) This isn’t just reading the material over and over, but rather critically and actively engaging with the content of the material. â€Å"To set down your reaction to important words and sentences you have read, and the questions they have raised in your mind, is to preserve those reactions and sharpen those questions† (p12.) When reading a great book, marking in notes is also almost essential every time a new character is introduced. Anytime something important about that character is revealed, like background story, physical appearance, motivations, etc., you can underline it. Later on in the book sometimes characters will re-appear out of nowhere and you can put a note there on which page they were described. This helps a lot for books in which there are a lot of characters, or the characters have exotic names. Milton Adler brings up a good point that is relative when reading a book with a complex story-line and a dynamic plot. â€Å"You can pick up the book the following week or year, and there are all your points of agreement, disagreement, doubt, and inquiry. It’s like resuming an interrupted conversation with the advantage of being able to pick up where you left off† (p13.) Unfortunately for myself, I tend to lack the drive to read paperback books, let alone actively engage in the story by writing my own thoughts in. But I do read an extensive amount online, ranging anywhere from short anecdotes, all the way to peer reviewed papers from scientists and university professors. Fortunately for me, I do enjoy reading. The benefits of reading to me are invaluable. It stimulates my brain and makes me more of a creative thinker. It also expands and improves my vocabulary. Reading online has introduced me to new ideas and ways of thinking; It has increased my knowledge of things I once only half-understood. It has shed light on countries I believed I knew so much about, like Russia and North Korea, Afghanistan and India. It has introduced me to people I might otherwise never have heard of. I actively seek out sources which offer ideas and insights, which increase my understanding of the world, and so I think that without the information I obtained through reading I would be clueless. In conclusion, Mortimer Adler has made some credible points that are useful, if put into practice. By actively reading the text and jotting down questions you hope to learn answers to, you make it easier and more pleasant to read through the text the first time, and you engage yourself actively with the text, generating a personal interest through the questions you’ve written down in the information being presented in the text. This makes the reading more interesting and more rewarding. When you go back and annotate the text thoroughly while reading it through, you blaze y ourself a trail through the text that makes it much easier to navigate later on. If someone questions your interpretation of something you read, you can quickly and easily find the passage from your margin comments and highlighting colors. If you need to cite a passage from the text in an essay, it will also be very easy to find. Every time you need to review in order to prepare for class discussion, a quiz, or an essay, you can do it in a small fraction of the time and gain a deeper, more conscious understanding of information being inputted.

The DNR process, however, is required to be documented by a physician. Andrew Putnam (2003) presents a case where an eighty-eight year old patient’s code status was DNR; â€Å"However, the patient has never signed formal advance directive statement or assigned durable power of attorney for her health care to anyone.† (P utnam, 2003, 2025) Ethics can be simply stated as doing the right thing (Roberts, 2002, 242); but in this case ethics is questioned because the physician was faced with the decision to carry out the wishes of the patient or to make a decision based on legality. In this case, it may have been morally right to carry out the wishes of the patient who wanted DNR orders carried out, but it may have been the right choice to do the legal thing and not carried out due to lack of signed documentation. There have been many court cases, even some taken as far as the United States Supreme Court, which involved issues such as preserving/prolonging life and DNR. A prickling feeling rose in Faith’s stomach – this is so wrong – but the feeling of her lover’s lips seemed to make it feel so right.
